Sembawang undertook to construct the two elevated cone shaped water tanks that would be used to store processed Newater from the nearby Bedok Water Reclamation Plant. The Newater would then be supplied to the electronics chip manufacturing facilities as ultra pure water.
The tanks are 31.5m high with a top diameter of 43m. It consists of a central access RC core measuring 5.9m in diameter, and is capped at its top with a steel roof. The tank wall measured 650mm at its base and tapered to a lean 480mm at its top. They are post-tensioned both radially and circumferentially, and its internal surface cast with HDPE lining to prevent contamination.
Due to the tank’s height and degree of inclination, Sembawang E&C introduced a modified safe and fast insitu formwork and working platform construction system. The construction of the walls was carried out successfully with a typical construction cycle of 7 days was achieved for each concrete pour.
